Product Description

Old Fashioned Mens Grooming Aid FIRM HOLD has the same great scent as the original but with a stronger grip. Great additional hold for those hot summer days or wildly out of control hair types. Also works great for flat tops and dryer ‘wash and wear’ looking hairstyles.

The Iron Society should be a staple in everyone’s pomade basket. Fantastic hold, fantastic scent, a mans man pomade. Brewed by a barber who got the formula right. Buy it and the waterbased to alternate with the firm oil based every couple days. Wow!

    My hair profile:
I’ve medium thick, wavy hair. I wear a side part with a contour. At the moment, I’m using a brush with wild boar hair, a Denman brush plus a wide tooth comb (detangler). During styling, I use brushes most. Use a tangle teezer to avoid tug. More info on this handy tool: https://piw74.com/2016/07/16/combs-brushes-afro-picks-an-inventory/

Described as: musky, masculine, with a hint of citrus. Detect a smoky and spicy odor: manly aroma. Not permeating, not abrasive in the jar or in the hair. Whiffs from time to time and these are well balanced. An accessible and agreeable scent matching the 30’s spirit in my opinion, I dig it!

    Application process – result:
Application to damp hair to ease the styling process and to straighten out my waves better. Used 3 average licks. It’s a pomade with a yellowish tinge. Getting out of the jar: top layer is a bit hard but once you push slightly, the product comes out easy. Layer beneath is much softer. Pomade is not that tick, breaks down easily. You get a creamy, somewhat sticky, not overly greasy texture with a waxy feel. Working into the mane: some grip but not painful or tedious. Disperses easily with some tension. Slicking back: some resistance combing with my Denman brush. I used my tangle teezer for the first comb lap. Latter does not work perfect with waxier stuff but helps to comb through in a way you’re not breaking or ripping hairs out that much. TIS does not rip hairs out at all being a firm hold. Styling process: not the easiest but not bad or a hassle the first time using (much better the next days). It just took me some more time to get the shape that I wanted. It is not a light weight, has more of a medium to firm weight and does not provide tons of volume to get my front lifted. This is a firm in terms of strength and not made to give high height. This was a little issue I got using it on the first day. It has a good control and keeps the hair together because of how sticky it is but not in an unworkable way. Waxy it is too but not overly. It has a good wax-slickness ratio. My waves were tamed right away and even after some recombing they did not show up which is a big plus for me. My cowlick area which is troublesome was held in place rather quick. Strays, flyaways: a few. Hair did not tend to split. Got a nice, clean and neat hair style with a good average height. My hair was still in place after looking back after around an hour: no sag, just some minor touch ups needed.

Low, natural shine, according to the brewer. It has a nice luster: around natural in my hair. All day present shine.

    Hold – endurance:
Firm (strong) hold. To me: a medium-firm/solid medium. Has some good endurance despite being in rainy, very windy weather, temperatures around the 50’s, a few walks, no strenuous physical chores. Minor sag, some strays, no splits after walking through a storm with rain! This pomade does a good job!

Restyled several times at the beginning and my waves remained under control which is a big plus. Some pomade’s waxes tend to break rather quick after a few touch ups and because of the weakened control my waves show up. I just don’t like wavy hair. Did not need to restyle throughout the day. Restyle test: no waves, no hairs sticking up, no saggy mane, hair looked as new again.

    Build up:
Strong, clean, waxy and manageable. Good build up properties to create higher styles.

    Washing out:
3-4 washes which is typical/normal for a petro based pomade. Hair type and the quantity in enacts the easiness of process as well.

    Hair, scalp issues:

    Similar pomades:
The iron society original oil based.
    O’Douds heavy oil based.
    The mail room barber classic.

    Distinguish itself by:
    Styles comfortable for a firm.
Several restyles don’t let waves come through.
    Great build up.
